LEGAL AID IMPACT PROJECT
Ein Bericht von Henog Tjikune, Ericas Sohn und Jurastudent an der UNAM – University of Namibia:
The faculty of law requires all 4th year students to execute a social program / project aimed at ploughing back to the community, of which is referred to as the impact project under the legal aid module. The impact project challenges students to use their legal skills and the knowledge that they have acquired from class to address a social issue by applying the law practical real life issues.
The Aristotle and Partners group decided to focus on child maintenance as a contemporary issue of concern within our community. The project planning and preparations started in first semester of 2018 as a requirement of the honours degree (LLB) completion.
The pre-community engagement activities in and around the area of Havana were very effective because the project had a turn up of over 200 community members, who were eager to listen to information on child maintenance. The program was crafted to ensure maximum participation of the community. Majority of the time was allowed for the community to ask as many questions as they liked, mostly relating to maintenance law.
Some of the questions asked by the community were:
- Can men also claim for maintenance?
- Is more than one child entitled to maintenance claim?
- What happens when both parents are unemployed?
All of these questions and more outside the scope of child maintenance were answered to the attendees in three different languages.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Alle Studierende des letzten Semesters des Jurastudiums an der University of Namibia müssen soziales Engagement zeigen. Dabei sollen die Kenntnisse und Kompetenzen, die sie im Studium erlangt haben, in der Praxis in einem Projekt mit gesellschaftlichem Mehrwert anwenden. Henog und seine Kommilitonen beschlossen – mit der Unterstützung der Anwaltskanzlei Aristotle and Partners – einen Informationstag zum Thema Unterhalt von Kindern im sozialen Brennpunkt Havana zu veranstalten. Dieser Tag war ein voller Erfolg. Rund 200 Besucher nahmen an der Veranstaltung teil und konnten allerlei Fragen zum Thema stellen, darunter:
- Können Männer Anspruch auf den Kindesunterhalt erheben?
- Kann man auf mehr als ein Kind Anspruch auf Unterhalt erheben?
- Was ist, wenn beide Elternteile arbeitslos sind?
All diese Fragen fanden Gehör und wurden – auch in den unterschiedlichen Stammessprachen – beantwortet.
Dieses Projekt wurde von durch die Zeltmiete sowie Getränke und Essen für die Besucher gefördert.
